CONSTITUTION AND BY-LAWS, LOUISIANA SECTION – AAPT

Article I. Name

The name of this organization shall be the Louisiana Section of the American Association of Physics Teachers.

Article II. Objectives

The objective of this organization shall be the advancement of the knowledge and the instruction of Physics.

Article III. Membership

  1. Individual membership will be open to all Louisiana residents who are a) teachers of physics or physical science, or b) persons who are interested in promoting the objectives of the organization.
  2. Institutional membership will be open to all educational institutions in Louisiana.
  3. Sustaining membership will be open to all commercial organizations interested in promoting the objectives of the organization.
  4. Emeritus membership will be awarded to any retiring member who has been an individual member for the five years immediately preceding his retirement.

Article IV. Officers

  1. The officers of this organization shall be the president, the president-elect, the secretary-treasurer and the council representative to the National AAPT.
  2. The president shall preside at the annual business session and at meetings of the Executive Board, and shall have such other duties as are ordinarily associated with a presidential office. He shall hold office from the close of one Annual Meeting to the close of the next Annual Meeting.
  3. The president-elect shall be chairman of the Program Committee. He shall take office at the close of the first Annual Meeting following his election and shall succeed to the presidency at the close of the next Annual Meeting. A vacancy In the presidency shall be filled by the succession of the president-elect, who shall serve as president during the following year also.
  4. The secretary-treasurer shall have the duties ordinarily associated with that office and shall serve from the close of the Annual Meeting following his election to the close of the next Annual Meeting.
  5. The council representative will represent the section on the council of the National AAPT and will serve from the close of the Annual Meeting following his election to the close of the next Annual Meeting.

Article V. Executive Board and Committees

  1. The Executive Board shall consist of the president, the president-elect, the secretary-treasurer. the council representative, the two living past-presidents of most recent incumbency, and two elected members-at-large.
  2. The Executive Board will govern the Section and will be empowered to submit questions to the membership of the Section by mail ballot when deemed necessary by a majority of the Executive Board.
  3. The Executive Board will be empowered to fill vacancies in the offices of secretary-treasurer and council representative and to appoint an alternate council representative in cases where the regularly elected council representative is unable to attend National Council meetings.
  4. The Executive Board shall have power to direct the president to appoint such committees as deemed necessary, the term of such committees to end at the same time as the president’s unless otherwise directed by the Board.
  5. A nominating committee will be appointed each year with members chosen by the Executive Board.

Article VI. Election of Officers and Members-at-Large

Officers and members-at-large of the Executive Board will be elected during the three months prior to the Annual Meeting by a mail ballot of the voting membership in such a manner as may be directed by the Executive Board. The ballot shall contain the names of the candidates nominated by the nominating committee for each office to be filled as well as the names of candidates nominated directly by at least ten percent of the voting membership. A call for nominations by the voting membership shall be issued by the secretary-treasurer at least two months before the mail ballot is distributed and such nominations must be received by the secretary-treasurer at least one month before the mail ballot is distributed. The ballot shall specify those nominations made by the nominating committee.

Article VII. Meetings

There will be one Annual Meeting of the Section at the time and place determined by the Executive Board. The Annual Meeting shall consist of a business session and other activities as determined by the Executive Board.

Article VIII. Amendments

This constitution may be amended by a two-thirds majority of those voting in a mail ballot of the Section conducted In such a manner as may be directed by the Executive Board. Amendments may be proposed by the Board or by petition to the president by at least ten percent of the voting membership and must be submitted to the membership for a veto within one year of Its proposal.
BY-LAWS

I. Dues

Annual dues will be set by the Executive Board in an amount necessary to cover printing and mailing costs for section business only. The dues will be collected at the Annual Meeting for individual members renewing membership and at any time for new individual members. Only those members whose dues are current will be allowed to vote and hold office In the section.

II. Membership In National AAPT

Membership in the National AAPT is not a prerequisite for active membership in the Louisiana Section of the AAPT with the exception that nonmembers of the National AAPT may not serve as a representative to the National AAPT Council.
