Have you ever enjoyed a sunset over the marsh, a chorus of barred owls in the swamp, or the open woods of an upland forest?   While you were at work?  These are a few benefits of being a field biologist.   My research has been centered around investigating the affects of salinity, flooding, and age on baldcypress sapling growth and survival in the field.   Additional research interests included factors that limit natural regeneration of baldcypress, germination requirements of forested wetland species, and intraspecific variation in baldcypress.  In general, my current research interest remains within the field of forest ecology.
deer1.jpg (53813 bytes) I have always enjoyed teaching biology and science in general.   It is my objective to get students to think critically and be able to apply concepts they learn in science rather than just memorize them.  My classes are usually driven by questions I pose to the class or vice versa through the utilization of an inquiry-based approach to teaching.  Ultimately, I want students to be able to intelligently and confidently communicate their ideas, to friends and family, of how acquired scientific knowledge really affects their world. It is this type of domino effect that many educators, conservationists, environmentalists and I share as a goal and are striving to achieve by promoting scientific literacy.
